"Coca
Cola - American solution or American pollution" was made by the Danish
teacher Diana Bergen Sørensen, who participated in the seminar in Linz
in November 2004. The project covers the historical aspects of this
American icon, the influence on society as well as what the beverage
consists of. The Coca Cola project was carried out with a 7th grade involving the subjects Danish, English, History,
Chemistry, Maths and Art. The pupils had very specific things to
do like taking measurements. There was also a possibility of working in
a freer way, where they could produce their own exercises like creating
a commercial. Generally speaking they had to analyze the product,
produce their own products and to make commercials for new ones. One central aim of the project was that the pupils should develop the ability to go for facts before taking a stand and choose. The project method was used so that the subjects involved all had concrete aims fulfilled. Documents:

Consumer Survey Students
collect information of the consumer behaviour of themselves and their
families. They fill in a Consumer Survey form. They give information on
where they get money from and how much they spend it on different
things. The results of this part will be presented as a PowerPoint
slideshow or in posters
Chemistry of Coca-Cola In
the chemistry lessons pupils will distillate water out of Coca-Cola and
see what other ingredients it consists of. Pupils will also “test”
certain urban legends of Coca-Cola.
Urban legends and myths Pupils
search for information on different myths and urban legends of
Coca-Cola. They try to find reasons and justifications for these
beliefs. They also try to find information whether these beliefs have
any truth in them or not. Finally, pupils make posters of these legends.
Critical thinking Pupils
get homework to observe Coca-Cola advertisements on television, in
cinemas, on the Internet, and to collect advertisements from magazines.
A group of pupils creates a Coca-Cola ad and presents it. This ad will be filmed.
Pupils in history and geography groups will work in groups and search information on the history, culture, geography and nature of the USA. Each group will concentrate on a different topic.
