Traditions and Customs in Greece

ΤRADITIONS

AND CUSTOMS IN GREECE

At Christmas and on New Year’s Eve in our country we have some customs.

Forty days before Christmas, a religious fast begins for the reception of this big event of Christianity.

When Christmas comes we decorate a tree (fir tree or pine tree) or a ship and all the house.

We make sweets. Melomakarona is a traditional sweet.

On Christmas Day we go to church in the morning and after that we make a stuffed turkey for Christmas dinner.

On New Year’s Eve we make a special bun ‹vasilopita› and we put a coin into this bun. We cut the bun on New Year’s Eve and whoever finds it will be lucky, it means that the new year is going to go well for him.

In the night of New Year’s Eve Santa Claus brings presents and he leaves them under the tree. We play cards too and when the year changes we break a pomegranate and some people shot with their guns because they want the old year to go away and in this way they welcome the new year.
